Cegeka Arena

A concise history

KRC Genk have been playing at the Cegeka Arena since 1990. It was referred to as the Thyl Gheyeselinckstadion back then. The name of de stadium changed three times until they settled on Cegeka Arena in 2021, due to a new sponsorship. The stadium used to sell out fast after it opened in 1990. That’s why the first expansion already took place a few years after. This was followed by two other expansions in order to meet the demand of supporters who wanted to visit games of KRC Genk. If the 2022 World Cup was hosted by the Netherlands and Belgium, the Cegeka Arena would have underwent a large-scale renovation and expansion. The capacity would have been increased to 40,000-45,000 but these constructions never took place. The idea to create an entire leisure complex around the stadium is still in the air. When the project is finished, you’ll be able to find gyms, bowling centres and sports stores over there.

Visit the Cegeka Arena

The Cegeka Arena is only 7.5 kilometres away from Genk’s city centre. It only takes ten minutes to travel towards the stadium by car. It takes a little longer when travelling with public transportation, namely 40 minutes. You can travel in several ways from the city’s centre to the Arena. You can embark bus G1 at bus station Stadhuis, and disembark the bus at Waterschei Nieuw Texas. Three buses, G6, G8 and 33, depart to the stadium from Genk’s Station. You should disembark bus G6 at Waterschei Ziekenhuis, G8 at Zwartberg Bewe and bus 33 at Zwartberg Cockerillplaats. You do need to walk another 20 minutes towards the stadium from all of these bus stops, whereas you only need to walk three more minutes when travelling with bus G1. Make sure you do leave on time because you might get stuck in a traffic jam on your way to the stadium. Have a great time during your visit at the Cegeka Arena!
