A concise history of the Wolves

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC was founded in 1877 by two pupils of the St. Luke’s Church School in Blakenhall. Twelve football clubs created the Football League, and the Wolverhampton Wanderers can proudly say they were included in the foundation of the now known English Football League (EFL). The club, which is generally known as ‘the Wolves’, have won 17 trophies in total that exist out of 11 League titles, 4 FA Cups and 2 League Cups. The biggest rivals of the wolves are Birmingham CityAston Villa and West Brom. A match between the Wolverhampton Wanderers and one of these clubs will absolutely be an exciting match. A match between one of the clubs against the top 7 of the Premier League will be just as sensational, of course. Earning points are crucial in the Premier League competition, so book your football trip to the Wolverhampton Wanderers and see for yourself!

Wolverhampton Wanderers' successes

The club thrived in the fifties when Stan Cullis became the manager in 1948 and Billy Wright was the designated captain of the team. During this decade the FA Cup was won for the third time, and they became champions of England by winning the First Division. This was the third time to have been champions of a division, which made them the only club to have won three championships of three different divisions. The club also won an international match against Hungary in this decade, which lead to the world wanting to see the best clubs of Europe compete against each other. The formation of the European Cup was a result of Wolverhampton Wanderers defeating Hungary. The Wolves were therefore one of the first British clubs to participate in the now called UEFA Champions League.

The Wolves have won two League titles and another FA Cup. A less successful period followed, but their motto: ‘Out of Darkness Cometh Light’ turned out to be true and they reconquered their place in the UEFA Europe League. A football trip to the Wolverhampton Wanderers should therefore definitely be on your bucket list!

Visit the Molineux Stadium

The Wolverhampton Wanderers play their home games in the Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton. This stadium already opened its doors in 1889! The first UEFA Cup final was held in the Molineux Stadium. This happened in 1972 and the capacity was 38.362 back in the day. Due to standing no longer being allowed in stadiums, the capacity decreased to 31.400. it is one of the first stadium where artificial lights were installed in the fifties. This way, it was possible to play football during the evenings.
