Boxing Day 2022

Traditionally, Premier League football is played on Boxing Day. The first football matches will be played on Boxing Day this year after the World Cup in Qatar. There’s only eight days between the World Cup finals and Boxing Day. Three London derbies are scheduled and Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard gets to take on his old employer with Aston Villa.

Fixtures Boxing Day 2022/23

Due to the World Cup in Qatar, almost all European competitions have been moved. The Premier League will stop after the weekend of November 12 and they’ll start again six weeks later on Boxing Day.

Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa will face Liverpool in Villa Park. Will he and his team push Liverpool further down into a slump, or is Jürgen Klopp capable of getting his team back on track? Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester will face the newly promoted Nottingham Forest. According to the statistics, this should be an easy win, but it could be that many footballers of Manchester are still recovering from the World Cup. Championship contenders Arsenal will play against West Ham United on the 26th of December. Manchester City star Haaland will undoubtedly want to score some goals after six weeks of rest. Newcastle is given the task to stop the Nordic phenomenon.

A full agenda because of the winter World Cup

FIFA decided to let the World Cup take place during the winter because of the steaming hot summers in Qatar. Many European competitions started playing earlier because of this. The Premier League and the Dutch Eredivisie for instance, started as early as the fifth of August. An entire week earlier than they were supposed to start. The winter break for international teams that participate in the World Cup will vary between eight days and three weeks, depending on how far they’ll get in the World Cup and what national competition they participate in.

Footballers that won’t participate in the World Cup – like Erling Haaland – will enjoy a six-week-long winter break. So, there’s a considerable difference between the performances of players that make it far in the World Cup and the non-participating players. And in addition, don't forget the midweek cup matches. In other words: many top footballers will be affected tremendously by the full agenda this year.

Why Boxing Day?

Boxing Day is the most famous competition of the year in the Premier League. The name Boxing Day finds its origin in the term 'Christmas Box'. This is a box full of items people used to give to the poor a day after Christmas Day. The boxes usually contained gifts and treats. Playing football on Boxing Day is an honoured tradition in England and it has been this way since the first Premier League season in 1888/89. Many years ago, they used to go hunting on Boxing Day, but this quickly changed to football. There’s no need for you to save the date, because Boxing Day always takes place on the 26th of December.
